Tea Tree essential oil, also known as melaleuca oil, is distilled from the leaves of the native Australian plant Melaleuca alternifolia. Tea tree oil has been used as a traditional medicine by the Aboriginal people of Australia for centuries by crushing tea tree leaves to extract the oil, then inhaling it to treat coughs and colds or applying it directly to the skin for healing.Tea tree oil contains a number of compounds that have been shown in scientific studies to kill certain bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Certain terpine constituents in the oil also appear to increase the activity of your white blood cells, supporting immune function. These antimicrobial properties make tea tree oil a highly valued natural remedy for treating bacterial and fungal skin conditions, preventing infection, and promoting healing.

*Fun fact: There are more than 200 species of Melaleuca plants, including around 40 that are known as paperbark trees. At least four of these are commonly used in essential oil remedies, including the commonly known Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), Naiouli (Melaleuca quinquinervia), Melaleuca bracteata & Melaleuca fulgens
