The ancient Egyptian Susinum perfume is believed to be composed of the sacred Blue Lotus (blue water lily) combined with Rose, Myrrh, Saffron, Cardamom and Cinnamon, and some recipes also include Calamus (Sweet Flag).  It has an exotic, floral smell that elevates the spirits & is claimed to have aphrodisiac qualities.

Blue lotus was used both as an aphrodisiac to stimulate sexual desire and potency and in meditation to stimulate the third eye. This beautiful sweet scented flower is known to induce a state of euphoria, calmness, and relaxation and is also used as a sleep aid for the purpose of lucid dreaming or shamanic journeying, and to relieve insomnia.

Emotionally and energetically, Rose Essential Oil help promote balance and calm for the mind, body, and spirit. Also known as the “Oil of Love”, Rose Otto Essential Oil has a deep psychological effect as it encourages opening of the heart while soothing the emotions, being especially useful for anxiety and depression.

Myrrh has been considered incredibly valuable healing for its healing properties since ancient times and is best known beyond its spiritual applications for treating skin conditions, for oral health and respiratory conditions.

Emotionally and energetically, Cardamom Essential Oil has strong calming and grounding properties, promoting emotional equilibrium when diffused or used in direct palm inhalation. It exerts a fortifying influence on mental functioning, reducing drowsiness and improving concentration. Its exotic character is sensual and warming, making it a key component of aphrodisiac oil blends.

Saffron has powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties, especially wonderful for skin conditions.

Calamus Root, also known as Sweet Flag, was well-known in Biblical times and mentioned in Exodus 30: 22-25 as one of the ingredients of the 'holy anointing oil’.  The long history of Calamus Root includes use by Chinese herbalists, Egyptians, Greeks, European and native American cultures.  In Ayurvedic practice it is known as Vacha and in Egypt is revered as an aphrodisiac dating to present day.  

The fragrant bark of Cinnamon, which is harvested twice a year, is one of the oldest recorded spices in history, and was in ancient times considered as valuable as gold.  It was also used in the funerary preparations and rites of embalming in Ancient Egypt.

Some formulations of Susinum had a wine and honey base while others were infused in Ben (Moringa) oil.  We have chosen the latter for our deliciously sensuous perfume potion and, like all the ancient perfumes, this one also has wonderful medicinal benefits for the body-mind-soul!
