This ancient, spicy and woodsy perfume formulation is based of the recipe for the sacred Kyphi incense recorded on the walls of the temple at Philae, which was the site of an extensive temple complex in Egypt.

I chose this source for multiple reasons: most importantly, it is the source that is closest to the original culture, time, and intended setting that is also the most-complete.  The recipe of Philae contains a complete list of ingredients used, including exact amounts, as well as detailed instructions for making the incense. The temple recordings also specifically state that it is used for temple rituals. Another reason was that this recipe had the benefit of centuries-worth of prior research, study, and experimentation as compared with earlier recipes found in other papyruses and hieroglyphs.

Finally, I considered the great historical importance of the temple at Philae, a sacred place to the Egyptians. Philae was the site of a Ptolemaic-period temple dedicated to the goddess Isis (Aset), which became the last bastion of pharaonic religion in history.  This temple was not closed down by the Christian religious organization until well after their rise to power.

Our Essence of Kyphi perfume remains true to the original ingredients and proportions in the Kyphi incense, but in essential oil form instead of dried and ground, and substituting the sticky fruit, wine and honey base that heals it together for a jojoba and castor bean carrier oil base.

Below are listed some of the history and properties of the oils which formulate our Essence of Kyphi perfume based on my research into the history of it’s composition and uses:

Frankincense & Myrrh are symbolic of Healing or Intercession. Both Frankincense and Myrrh have significant healing abilities.

Frankincense is commonly used in religious ceremonies around the world and is employed in the practice of meditation and is characterized as having a blend of spicy and woodsy perfume. It is believed by a large number of individuals that it may assist in bringing about the purification of the mind, body, and soul.  Myrrh, used as a burial spice and in purification rites, was also a primary ingredient of the Holy Anointing Oil.

Mastic Essential Oil is distilled from the fresh leaves of the Pistacia lentiscus tree, which is a relative of the pistachio and is also the source of Mastic Gum, a beautiful incense resin.  The relaxing qualities of Mastic can help ease stress and tension, as well as being invaluable in meditation since it helps to calm the mind. The uplifting scent of Mastic Essential Oil can be inhaled to relieve headaches, and settles and soothes the nerves for assisting sleep and is also recognized with being an anti-inflammatory being good for minor sports injuries or bruising and grazes. It has a strong antispasmodic action, especially when the pain is from either injury or muscle soreness.

Calamus Root, also known as Sweet Flag, was well-known in Biblical times and mentioned in Exodus 30: 22-25 as one of the ingredients of the 'holy anointing oil’.  The long history of Calamus Root includes use by Chinese herbalists, Egyptians, Greeks, European and native American cultures.  In Ayurvedic practice it is known as Vacha and in Egypt is revered as an aphrodisiac dating to present day.

In addition to helping reduce unwanted bacteria, microbes, or fungus, Lemongrass Essential Oil is also known to help manage minor pain and inflammation, work to ease situational depression, and help support healthy digestion. Emotionally and energetically, Lemongrass Essential Oil can invite comfort during difficult emotional transitions, and encourage motivation during times of anxiety, stress and depression. The stimulating and refreshing aroma also uplifts and relaxes, assisting in both reducing fatigue and energizing the mind.

Peppermint essential oil produces a sensation of coolness which the body counteracts by increasing blood flow to the area of application, producing a warming effect.  Peppermint is also revered for its many therapeutic properties and is helpful when looking to reduce unwanted bacteria and viruses as well as reduce pain and inflammation.  Emotionally and energetically, Peppermint is a refreshing and stimulating oil that is both soothing and enlightening. Peppermint's cool and clearing nature makes it ideal for stimulating mental agility and improving concentration for the tasks at hand. Peppermint Essential Oil awakens and refreshes the senses, often helping to promote self-confidence and stimulate new ideas and creativity.

Juniper Berry Essential Oil works to support clear breathing, detoxification and cleansing as well as invigorating, strengthening and refreshing the body and supporting the detoxification of the skin. This essential oil is also useful in helping with minor pain and inflammation management, reducing the presence of unwanted bacteria and fungus, and as a powerful immune support. The fresh aroma of Juniper Berry Essential Oil can produce a calming, grounding effect. While its properties include a strengthening effect on the nerves, psychologically Juniper is said to uplift the spirits during times of low energy, anxiety and weakness.

Cinnamon or “qinnamon” is a loan-word from the Greeks who again loaned it from the Phoenicians. Cinnamon is another one of the principal ingredients in the Sacred Kyphi Incense and the Holy Anointing Oil. This fragrant bark which is harvested twice a year, is one of the oldest recorded spices in history, and was in the old days considered as valuable as gold.  It was also used in the funerary preparations and rites of embalming in Ancient Egypt.

”Kyphi, or cyphi, or Egyptian cyphi is a compound incense that was used in ancient Khemet for religious and medical purposes. It can also be worn as a perfume. I just received it and put a tiny bit on my wrist and I am immediately feeling the effects of this sacred blend of oils on my nervous system. I’m smelling myself! Lol
Kyphi’s ingredients can be found in accounts of practices recorded in Biblical and Ayurvedic scriptures, as well as accounts of usage in the far East as well.
I’ll be using it in prayer, meditation, and other ritual practices.
The creator of this product is Freyja Inanna, Heal Thyself graduate, and Sr. Adepta Theorem on ReMember Institute’s Initiates Path. Her company produces a collection of potions, supplements, and apothecary products, some of which helped me to recover from a nasty 8 week long respiratory infection.
Her Kyphi perfume comes in this pretty bottle that feels so very appropriate for such a fine potion.
